The latest powerful and well-refined vehicle from Mercedes’s Maybach division, GLS 600 4Matic is good, but might not be good enough. The vehicle, although delivers good performance, lacks something that its rivals are providing.
Even though many would say, maybe you as well, that there is no need for such a vehicle, but when other carmakers are producing such luxury vehicles, how would Mercedes stay behind? The rival companies, such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce want to attract new customers to their SUVs, and the brand also wants to do the same.
The vehicle is at the top of the third-generation GLS lineup, which means it’s Maybach’s first proper SUVs. It has an advanced chassis, which is mated with the E-Active Air Matic suspension with a roll-reducing curve function. It provides ride comfort and rolling refinement, allowing it to compete with the rivals.
The company’s designers have done a lot of effort to make the vehicle different from the previous models. One of the efforts is placing the signature three-pointed star on the bonnet, which’s been done for the first time on its SUV model. There are other design changes as well like a new chrome grille featuring vertical louvers and prominent chrome elements within the bumpers. Just like the other GLS models, it uses the same 3094mm wheelbase. The overall design might not be as good as some other rival models, but you can’t deny that the design is very bold.
There’s a mild-hybrid drivetrain that provides the power to the vehicle, it was used in the recently launched S580 as well. There’s a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 petrol engine and a 48V starter-generator. The vehicle comes with a list of driving assistant functions.
If you compare it with the competitors, the range-topping Bentayga’s produces 600bhp and 661lb-ft from its twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter petrol W12. And, the twin-turbocharged 5.8-liter V12 petrol engine in Cullinan develops 559bhp and 623lb-ft.
Even though the designers have put in a lot of effort, the vehicle is being related to the standard GLS. The price is fairly high, so it’s only fair for the customers to ask for more than they are being provided. In the end, it’s only about whether it’s to your taste and can you afford it.
